Northwest Regional Cancer Center

As of February 1, 2016, Northwest Medical Center has acquired Northwest Regional Cancer Center.  The center is operating as a department of the hospital, a move that will allow the hospital to provide enhanced cancer care services throughout northwest Alabama.

After Northwest Medical Center was acquired by Curae Health, hospital management and Southeast Physician Network began discussions about ways the two organizations could work together.  The result of those discussions was the cancer center becoming part of the hospital.

Northwest Regional Cancer Center will continue to offer high quality services with the same professional, courteous staff including Radiation Oncologist Shelby P. Sanford, M.D. and Medical Oncologists Dmitriy Zak, M.D. and Laura Bunch, M.D. The center will continue to offer radiation oncology services with plans to add chemotherapy services in 2016. Adding chemotherapy services will allow Northwest Medical Center to offer more comprehensive oncology services at a convenient location for patients.

“We are excited to become part of Northwest Medical Center,” said Shelby P. Sanford, M.D., Radiation Oncologist. “By acquiring our operations and resources, Northwest Medical Center will further enhance oncology services across our communities and better meet the needs of our patients and physicians throughout this region.  That is our goal.”

Northwest Medical Center’s acquisition of the cancer center offers significant benefits to patients and doctors.  Bringing these services under the umbrella of the hospital expands the serviced offered by the hospital, improves coordination of the service with the hospital, and maintains the quality group of oncologists that have been associated with the center for many years.  Additionally, it allows for more cancer treatment options to our community without the need to travel a great distance.

“In today’s evolving healthcare environment, providers are constantly identifying ways that they can improve care and better serve their patients. Northwest Medical Center’s goal is to continue to increase the availability of high quality, outpatient services that are delivered locally,” said Michael Windham, CEO of Northwest Medical Center.  “As part of Curae Health, Northwest Medical Center is committed to providing high quality healthcare in northwest Alabama and to addressing the needs of rural healthcare.  By adding oncology services, we will be able to provide even better care to our patients,” said Andrea McLerran, COO for Curae Health.
